Extendable TV Console, 65 to 106 Inches Wide, Black

Most media consoles make you pick a width and live with it. This one slides. Closed, it sits at 65.4 inches wide. Pulled open, it reaches 106.3 inches, and it holds anywhere in between. That range covers a 55 inch screen in an apartment and a 120 inch setup in a finished basement, and it covers the awkward case in the middle, where you upgrade the television in two years and would rather not replace the stand along with it.

Three drawers are built into the center section of the frame. They take everything that normally ends up scattered across the top of a TV stand: remotes, controllers, game cases, streaming boxes, the HDMI cable you need twice a year. When you stretch the console out to its full width, the two ends open into bare surface on either side of that center block, which is where a soundbar, a game console, a lamp, or a pair of bookshelf speakers goes.

The cabinet is built from thickened MDF rather than thin panel stock, which is what keeps a piece this long from bowing in the middle once a heavy television sits on it. The surface is smooth and wipes clean with a cloth, so dust along the top does not turn into a project. Hardware throughout is metal and specified for long term use, and that matters more on an extending console than a fixed one, since the sliding mechanism is the part you actually move.

The finish is black with clean, unfussy lines. Nothing about it is decorative, which is the point. It reads as a media console in a living room, a long low surface in a bedroom, or a credenza behind a desk in a home office, and it does not compete with the furniture already in the room. Everything needed for assembly ships in the carton, including the panels, screws, and hinges. Give yourself open floor space before you start, because the parts for a console that opens past nine feet take up more room than you expect.
