I don't usually buy desks, but this VARIDESK Pro Plus 36 in black is awesome! I've got a 24" monitor, a heavy laptop, a speaker, and my gaming keyboard on it, and it lifts like a champ. There’s loads of space, so I can easily fit my laptop too. Pros: 1) It’s got lots of height settings, which is great since I'm 5'9". Just a heads up, if you're over 6'1", you might want to check it out first. 2) It raises and lowers easily. Even with 20 lbs on it, that’s no issue. 3) for stretching after meals because adjusting it takes just a second. 4) The keyboard area is big enough for my mouse and pad, which I love. 5) At $400, it's a steal! I saw similar desks for way more that aren't even as sturdy. 6) No assembly needed! Just unpack and you're good to go. Cons: 1) It’s not electric, just so you know. 2) It’s pretty large, takes up my whole table (5' x 3'). 3) It's heavy—about 50 pounds. I recommend two people for setup. Honestly, I can’t complain much. For the price, this is the best convertible desk out there. The build quality is solid, and it’s easy to use.

I'm really pleased with this desk. I initially thought a motorized sit/stand desk would be the way to go, but the manual adjustment here is quick and easy—actually better than I expected. It only takes about three seconds to raise or lower it. I do have a couple of concerns, though. First, my monitor shakes a bit, but I fixed that by putting some index cards on each side—see the photo I attached. The second issue is about height; I'm 5'7" and at the highest setting, it’s just about right for me, but I think someone who’s 6 feet tall might find the monitor a bit low, even though the keyboard height is fine. If I wanted, I could always raise the monitor on a stand, but I'd still need to secure it to keep it steady. Since I'm not too tall, I'm perfectly happy with the setup as is. Unpacking and putting it in place was simple since it comes fully assembled. It feels solid enough that I don’t worry about it tipping over. I even tried leaning on the keyboard tray to check its stability, and it held up perfectly. Sure, it does change the look of my room a bit, like I’ve moved some exercise equipment in, but when it's lowered, it becomes much less noticeable. I'm okay with its look for the health benefits it's going to provide—I'll use it way more than my dusty elliptical!

Probably the best and most affordable stand-up desk out there
I was looking for an affordable stand-up desk when someone recommended Varidesk. After comparing it to other complex-looking stand-up gizmos that clamped to your desk, I decided to give Varidesk a try. The design of the Varidesk Pro Plus seemed to make the most sense and was ideal for my notebook + external monitor setup. The desk shipped quickly and was a breeze to set up: no assembly, no clamping. Just clear your desk, unpack the Varidesk, then put all your stuff back on! The spring-loaded release works smoothly and it raises and lowers silently, with little effort. The construction is very solid and sturdy and the unit appears to be very high quality. There is a generous amount of space on both shelves to put your stuff. Just a couple of nits though:- I am 5' 10" and the raised height is just perfect for me in the standing position. Taller coworkers came by and tried it out and found the raised height still too low. If you're tall, you'll need to place some wood blocks beneath the feet.- The keyboard try area is very spacious and deep, but the "mouse pad" wings on either side are not very large and are unnecessarily close to your body. I like to push my keyboard further in and have my mouse arm extended a bit, but that's impossible given the design of the unit. My my mouse arm feels a bit cramped.- The unit is about $100 cheaper on Hawkins Woodshop, but they won't ship to Canada. :-(I docked one star for the mouse issue, because it's a recurring one that kind of annoys me. But otherwise the desk is very good. Edited mar 13: After using this for a few days, I've managed to reposition it a bit to minimize my "mouse" grievances. Therefore I am elevating it to 5 stars.
