Most of the dirt that ends up on your floors walks in on the bottom of a shoe, and it comes off in the first few steps past the door. Catching it there is the whole job of this mat. The surface is an absorbent polypropylene fabric in a double-layer construction, and the ribbed texture works like a scraper, pulling grit and moisture off the sole with each step instead of letting it ride into the house.

It measures 20 by 31.5 inches, with a thickness of just 0.4 inches. That low profile is the detail people overlook when buying a mat for the inside of a door. A thicker mat looks fine until the door catches on it, and then you spend the next year kicking it back into position. This one lets the door swing freely over the top.

Upkeep is simple, which is the only way upkeep actually happens. Shake it out over a trash bin or off the back step, and vacuum or sweep it as part of your normal routine. When it needs a real cleaning it goes in the washing machine, in water under 86 degrees Fahrenheit, or 30 degrees Celsius. Do not iron it, do not bleach it, and do not leave it out in direct sun for long stretches. In grey it hides between washes better than a light color would, and it works equally well at a front door, a back door, or any entryway where shoes come off.
