Flat printed leather-look fabric tends to go plasticky under a lamp, while a raised grain catches light unevenly the way hide does. It is why these sit convincingly on a leather sofa and also work as the darker anchor in a room full of linen and cotton.

They are waterproof, and that one fact changes where you can put them. Set them on a patio sectional and a sudden shower stops being a problem.
