Long sessions are where a chair earns its money. This one is built on a metal frame with a leather exterior over soft fabric padding, and the point of that combination is to keep you from shifting around and losing focus three hours in. The seat cushion is 19.5 inches wide, which gives most adults room to sit without the side bolsters pressing in.

The backrest reclines through a 90 to 160 degree range. Upright at 90 for typing and aiming, somewhere near 110 for reading, and out at 160 when you want to lean back and watch something. Seat height adjusts from 48.5 to 52 inches, with 52 inches the maximum height of the chair, so it can be dialed in for different desk heights and different people sharing the same room. A 360 degree swivel lets you turn to a second monitor or a shelf without dragging the base around with your feet.

Two cushions come with it and both are removable: a padded headrest pillow and a thick lumbar cushion with massage support. Run them together, take one off, or take both off. Some people want the neck support and skip the lumbar, and some want the opposite. Being able to decide beats living with someone else's idea of good posture. A retractable footrest pulls out from under the seat so you can put your legs up between rounds, then slides back when you need to roll up to the desk.

The black finish lets it disappear into a home office, a bedroom, or a study room instead of announcing itself. The chair ships with a tool kit and an installation manual, and the packaged unit measures 30 by 22 by 10 inches and weighs 44 pounds. Get a hand carrying the box up stairs. Forty-four pounds in an awkward carton is more than it sounds like on paper.
