Best bed setup we've had!
We've been fans of these Japanese futon mats for years now! I usually get two twin XL mats and place them side by side, then add a 2-3 inch king foam topper on top with a king fitted sheet. This setup has served as our king-sized bed for the last four years. It's easy to roll up each day, making space for other activities or to vacuum the area. I co-sleep with my kids, and the firmness of these mats means I don't stress about them rolling off and falling. It's definitely safer for kids to sleep on a firm surface. Even in my pregnancy, I find it comfy; I've gotten so used to this that normal mattresses feel painful to me now. Here are a few tips: If you have it on carpet, make sure to fold or roll it up daily since moisture can accumulate and cause mold. We like to roll up one side every couple of days and clean underneath. Another good idea is to take it outside to air it out, give it some good thumps to shake out dust, and let it sit in the sun. Adjusting from a typical western mattress can take a few weeks, so be patient with your body as it gets used to this. Honestly, this is the best value for a bed. It's versatile, easy to move, and lasts a long time. I recommend replacing it every 3-4 years, but they can last even longer. For all ages and helps with back pain too!

I saw a ton of great reviews before I decided to buy this mattress, and it definitely lives up to the hype. It’s not as thick as some others I've tried, kind of like what you'd find at IKEA, but it's comfortable to sleep on. Been using it for six months now, and everything's been. I would recommend it!

I've been using this for 4 months and love it
This futon mattress has been great for a few reasons. 1) It really opens up my room. I've noticed how much space a regular bed takes up, and during the day, I roll this mattress into a makeshift sofa, which I’ve enjoyed. 2) It’s better for my neck and body. I'm 58 and it's been comfortable for my back. I no longer deal with tingling in my hips, thighs, or arms like I did with my old mattress, which was decent quality. 3) It helps me keep things cleaner. I air it out weekly, and that means I also vacuum my room more often and keep up with changing my linens, which is something I didn't do as much before. It feels much cleaner. 4) I'm getting better sleep. I don’t wake up with pain or tingling anymore, which means I'm waking up more rested. Plus, I think the cleanliness of my sleeping space is beneficial for my sleep and mental health. Regarding thickness, it’s comfortable for me. I haven’t noticed it holding heat any more than a typical mattress, and I’m someone who tends to run hot. I've got some tricks to keep cool while using it, like taking a quick cool shower at night, running a fan, and using three layers of sheets when I sleep.

Awesome!
This is perfect for me. It's nice and cozy, and the twin size is actually bigger than I anticipated, which is a bonus. I'm 4'11" and weigh 108 lbs, and there's plenty of space for me. Sometimes I just need to escape the noise, so I use it to relax in my home office. The cover is soft, and it feels great. Good materials and just the right firmness. No weird smell when I took it out of the package.

I decided to try the shikibuton after going through several mattresses like Nectar, Casper, and Zinus that just didn’t suit me. With the busy season at work, sleep was hard to come by—I was waking up after an hour or two every night. After doing some research, someone suggested a shikibuton on the floor, which sounded odd since I’ve always used a mattress and frame. Desperate for a change, I gave it a shot, and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been sleeping really well and waking up feeling refreshed. It took a couple of days to adjust, but now I can’t imagine going back. Even with all the stress from work, I’m able to get a good night’s sleep. The shikibuton has a nice balance of comfort and firmness when paired with my mat. I can’t believe how effective it is despite being thinner than a regular mattress. Plus, it’s easy to fold and store away. I live in a four-story home, and sometimes it’s tiring to haul my yoga stuff up and down. In under a minute, I can put away the shikibuton and lay out my yoga mat. This has been a game changer for me. It’s way more affordable than the mattresses I returned to Costco too. If you’re struggling with traditional mattresses, I recommend trying a shikibuton. I’ve also noticed no squeaking or sliding around, which is a nice perk!

Great for Firm Support
For around 13 years, I’ve been sleeping on a blanket on the floor because I like that hard surface that mattresses just can’t give me. But now that I’m on hardwood, I needed a bit more support for my hips, and a folded blanket didn’t work. This Japanese mattress has been just right when paired with a foldable gymnastics mat. It’s firm but gives enough for my hips when I’m on my side. If you like a really firm setup, this is it. If you’ve got carpet with padding, you might be fine without the gymnastics mat. But if you’re putting it on hardwood, tile, or concrete, I’d suggest getting a 4’ x 8’ x 2” gymnastics mat to provide that support with a little extra cushion. I’ve had the shikibuton for about nine months now, and while it’s still good, I’ve noticed it’s not as cushy as before. Lying on my side for a while started to hurt my hips even with the gymnastics mat. I’m looking into a trifold mattress from TANSU NO GEN that’s supposed to be firm and 4” thick, which might help. I’ll keep the shikibuton to use as a topper if the new mattress is too hard. Overall, I still recommend this shikibuton. At 6’1” and around 215-220 lbs, I think lighter people would have no problem with it, especially with a gymnastics mat underneath if your floors aren't padded.
