The best argument for a lap desk is the couch. You get a stable, level surface for a laptop without hauling yourself back to a desk, and you get it without the heat of the machine sitting directly against your legs.
This one measures 15.7 inches wide, 12.6 inches deep, and 3.1 inches tall, or 40 by 32 by 8 centimeters. The top is MDF, a medium density fiberboard, in a rustic brown finish. There is room for a laptop with a little left over for a phone or a notepad, and the surface is flat enough to eat off of, which is most of the point if breakfast in bed is on the agenda. Underneath is a cushion filled with plastic foam particles that sits against your legs and takes the hard edge off the board.
Turn it over and the cushion becomes a pillow. That sounds like a gimmick until the middle of a long afternoon, when a short nap on the sofa is clearly the right call and there is nothing else within arm's reach. The handle makes it easy to carry from room to room, so it moves from the couch to the bed to a patio chair without ceremony.
It weighs 2.2 pounds, about 1 kilogram, light enough for a kid to carry and light enough to hold on your lap for an hour without noticing it is there. There is nothing to assemble. It comes ready to use straight out of the carton, which contains one lap desk.
A few care notes from the manufacturer. Keep sharp objects off the top so the finish does not get scratched, do not pull hard on the foam, and keep the desk away from open flame. Past that, it asks very little of you.
